American Sign Language Conversation

Thursday, September 19, 2019

7:00 PM – 8:30 PM

Learning a new language can be a lot easier when you have a chance to practice with other people. Whether you are a fluent, an advanced signer, or just learning we welcome you to come and converse in this space with other people! Conversations can be about anything and everything, so long as it is in sign language (that’s correct, no voices in the room). Please feel free to bring a pen and paper to help in communicating with others if you do not know how to sign what you want to say.

Members of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, interpreter students, ASL students, and people who are curious are all welcome.

If you have questions, feel free to contact Cassandra at cassandrap@dkpl.org or (815) 756-9568 ext. 2150.

Explore Your Family History with Newspapers.com

Wednesday, September 11, 2019

3:30 PM – 4:30 PM

Searching through old newspapers can be difficult. If you don’t have an exact date, using microfilm is tedious and time-consuming, and the quality of the image isn’t always great. Finding hard copies of old newspapers is almost impossible because they degrade so quickly.

Join us to learn about the library’s new database, Newspapers.com. Newspapers.com is the largest online newspaper archive consisting of over 514 million pages of historical newspapers from 12,100+ newspapers from around the United States and beyond. This includes the Daily Chronicle from 1895 through 1963. Learn how to browse these newspapers and search them for information specific to your genealogy interests. Feel free to bring your own laptop to follow along with the presentation.

This program is FREE and does not require registration.

For more information, contact Britta at brittak@dkpl.org or (815) 756-9568 ext. 2100.
