STEM Café: UP for the Count: how the 2020 census could affect Illinois

One of the biggest events of 2020 is the decennial census, the one time per decade when the United States counts every resident. The census is constitutionally mandated, and the numbers determine how many seats each state has in the House of Representatives, as well as how billions of dollars in federal funding are distributed. This census will determine if Illinois will lose one or two seats in the House of Representatives. At the next STEM Café, find out more about what information is collected in the census, how government agencies use that data and what is at stake for Illinois residents. About the speaker – Sherrie Taylor is currently the interim lead for the State Data Center Network in Illinois. She is a senior research associate in the Center for Government Studies at Northern Illinois University
