The Importance of Being Earnest

By Oscar Wilde

NIU Stevens Building, O’Connell Theater

October 24-28, 2018

First performed on February 14, 1895, The Importance of Being Earnest,by Oscar Wilde, has been revived numerous times since its premiere. It has also been adapted for the silver screen on three occasions, making it Wilde’s most recognizable and enduringly popular play.

The Importance of Being Earnest is a farce in which the main characters put on new personas to escape tiresome social obligations. Jack Worthing is a landowner in Hertfordshire, justice of the peace, and has many employees who work for and depend on him. Ernest is Jack’s scandalous brother who lives life in pursuit of pleasure, often resulting in troubles Jack must save him from. What nobody knows, however, is that Ernest is simply Jack’s alter-ego, made up so that Jack may disappear for days at a time to London to do what he pleases. Posing as Ernest, Jack falls madly in love with Gwendolyn, who has a preoccupation with the name Ernest. She makes it clear that she would never marry a man with any other name.

When Jack’s best friend Algernon Moncrieff (who only knows Jack as Ernest) begins to suspect that Jack has a double life, Jack comes clean about his alter-ego. Algernon uses this opportunity to use the Ernest alter-ego himself to woo young Cecily, Jack’s ward, who has been in love, sight-unseen with Jack’s mysterious brother Ernest. Hilarity ensues when both Cecily and Gwendolyn think they are engaged to Ernest Worthing, when it turns out, neither of them are.

Join us for this raucous adventure of romance and deception and find out for yourself if all really is fair in the game of love.
