About this event:
WOODEN BOX THEATER RETURNS TO THE HOUSE CAFE
On Sunday May 20th at 7:00pm area performance group Wooden Box Theater will present an evening that will display local theatrical performers, belly dance, poetry, and live music with their production of “Life in the Faster Lane,” the group’s ‘one night only’ return to the House Cafe in DeKalb. It will be co-hosted by long time Wooden Box Theater collaborator, Jade Cook, who is celebrating seven years with the group, along with area fashion model, Jeanette Marie Dulzo, who makes her debut with the group. Cook and Dulzo will be joined by fellow co-hosts Ruth Spaeth, Hoop artist Melissa Cansino, and Jamie Burd, of the local metal metal band, Innerot.
“Life in the Faster Lane” will feature live music by Bill Leighly, Joel LaVaughn, Matt Carlson of Section Gang, and ForeverStardust (featuring event co-writer Zephirine Moon Garden and Bear Wolf), Scott Christopher Barnes, the acoustic duo of Steve and Beth Barnes, area R’n’B/Soul singer, Mia Lynell (Breona Austin), and Jade Cook.
During the event the audience will be treated to original poetry read by long-time Wooden Box Theater collaborator, ForeverStardust co–founder, Bear Wolf. There will also be special guest appearances by long time Wooden Box Theater collaborators, Dan Maccabe and Gus Panourgias, who will assist with musician introductions for the event.
Performing a themed hoop presentation will be area hula-hoop artist, Melissa Cansino, who makes her anticipated debut with the group during the event. She will be performing to music by Amaranthe, Taylor Swift, PVRIS, and Tonight Alive, in a set hand-picked by Daniel Sherrill, who explains, “Typically in our events the hoop performers and their displays set the tone for the entire night, and captivate audience members in the process. I am confident Melissa will leave an impact on our group and the venue. She is a true talent.”
Wooden Box Theater event co-writer, Zephirine Moon Garden will perform a set of event inspired belly dances during the presentation. She had originally joined the group in November of 2011 at the group’s ‘James Bond’ themed event at the House Cafe, and as of late has become a valuable asset in the conception and the mapping out of the story-line segments during the group’s performances.
“Life in the Faster Lane,” in music, performance, layout, and structure will tell the story to the audience of the making of the show itself, and the elements that went into it’s creation and the writing of the event by it’s members. Lead writer Daniel Sherrill explains, “This particular event will be a one time return to The House Cafe, and will be a night to reminisce out-loud, along with the audience, about our past events there, and also to look forward to our new tour and adventures ahead as a group. This is a very strong current line-up of the group and it will be great to visit one of the first venues that Wooden Box Theater performed at during our beginning era.”
The event was written and conceived by Daniel Sherrill and Zephirine Moon Garden. The pair have been co-writers within Wooden Box Theater for nearly a year, with an upcoming 2018-2019 tour which begings in August, and will see the group tour venues in both DeKalb and Geneva in a series of events titled, “Desire to Win.”
Wooden Box Theater, as a performance and event writing team, began on stage during an edition of Open Mic at the House Cafe in the summer of 2006, and continues to evolve into an event directing team which has toured area venues in Sycamore/DeKalb and Kane County since. Their events typically feature a running story-line, along with exclusive live musical performances, and guest hosts, along with theatrical segments. The group’s ‘one night only’ performance will mark 12 years since their first appearance on the House Cafe stage.
Wooden Box Theater appearing in ‘Life in the Faster Lane’ will be held Sunday May 20th at 7pm at the House Cafe located at 263 E. Lincoln HWY in DeKalb, IL. Admission is $5 at the door and open to the public. For more information visit:
